Walking through the Heart of Venice
Welcome to the heart of Venice—where history, architecture, and spectacle converge. This is the ceremonial core of the city, a place where emperors were received, doges paraded, and artists left their mark in stone, mosaic, and marble. These two walks invite you to explore Venice’s most iconic spaces from two distinct angles.
The first walk is a deep dive into Piazza San Marco itself—one of the great piazzas of Italy—where centuries of religion, politics, and art unfold in a single, extraordinary square.
The second walk expands outward into the surrounding San Marco district, revealing quiet alleyways, elegant façades, and hidden campos that offer glimpses of everyday Venetian life behind the grandeur. Whether you’re strolling beneath the colonnades of the Procuratie or pausing for a spritz at a historic café, this is Venice at its most theatrical.
Note. I have prepared this walk for our first trip to Venice at the end of September, 2025. I will update it once we complete the walk.
JCV Walks in Central Venice

St. Marks Square
This walk is a deep dive into one of the great piazzas of Italy—Piazza San Marco, the ceremonial and cultural heart of Venice. Unlike our other walks that wind through neighborhoods and across bridges, this route stays centered around a single, extraordinary square. Here, centuries of history, religion, politics, and art converge in a space that has witnessed everything from grand processions to quiet reflection.

San Marco District
This self-guided walk explores the historic San Marco sesteri, the ceremonial and cultural heart of Venice. Starting in St. Mark’s Square, the route leads you past world-famous landmarks, through narrow alleyways, and into peaceful campos that reveal the city’s layered history. Along the way, you’ll encounter Byzantine mosaics, Renaissance façades, and glimpses of everyday Venetian life behind the grandeur.
